Bed Bugs are Real

A couple of years ago, our external legal counsel recommended we add a bed bug addendum to our lease agreement. We didn’t feel like it was necessary because we hadn’t heard of many issues in Northern Colorado. However, based on their persistence, we decided to follow their direction and add the bed bug addendum even though we didn’t think it was needed.

Fast-forward two years and here we are. We just finished our first bed bug eradication process and it was quite intense. We were surprised at the level of detail and preparation before the process started. So, what did we learn from the extermination process? It was an eye-opening experience and we now have experiential knowledge for future use.

From the first call to the end of the eradication process, it was an educational experience. When the suspicion of bed bug presence arose, we called a local Northern Colorado bed bug expert. They visited the property and did a thorough check of the unit. They pay close attention to heat registers, mattresses, and floorboards. After the initial visit, the expert confirmed the presence of bed bugs. Once the confirmation was received, it was time to prepare for the extermination and eradication.

In order to effectively treat the unit, the unit must be heated in excess of 130 degrees. As a result of the type of treatment, the occupants have to go through a great amount of detail to prepare. From candles to firearms to liquor to anything else that would be affected by the heat, it is all removed from the unit. Then, the experts come in with a great deal of equipment. The home is heated up to 130 degrees and remains there for a period of time. Then the treatment is wrapped up and the occupants return to the unit. The actual treatment time was just about 12 hours. So, while no one wants to hear about bed bugs, if you happen to bring them home with you, rest assured there are effective treatments to eradicate.
