As we come into our first encounter with arctic air in Northern Colorado, it is important to know about the most dangerous scenario one may face. The scenario I am referring to is one that happens in the confines of your own home and often goes unnoticed. It is known as the silent killer. I am referring to an odorless and invisible gas known as carbon monoxide.
When I think of carbon monoxide, I recall one occasion where a tenant called us and reported their carbon monoxide alarm was sounding. We told the tenant to immediately move outside into fresh air. We also directed the tenant to call 911, at once. I immediately drove to the home and the fire department was present when I arrived. I spoke with the fire department after they proceeded with their battery of tests. The alarm was tripped because the tenant’s car had been running in the garage. Even with the garage door open, there was enough carbon monoxide to get into the home when the tenant went back and forth between their garage and home, packing the car. The fire department tested the water heater as well as the HVAC system and they were deemed fine. The only location where very low levels of carbon monoxide were detected was the garage.
As I think back to this event and think of the upcoming arctic snap that will arrive later this week, it reminds me of the importance of carbon monoxide safety. Here are a few tips to keep you safe when it comes to carbon monoxide (CO):
- Install CO alarms outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for placement and mounting
- Test alarms once a month
- If the alarm goes off, call the fire department immediately
- If the alarm goes off, immediately move to fresh air or open a window/door.
- Avoid warming your car in the garage
- After a snowstorm, make sure all outdoor vents are clear of any snow build up
- Always use generators and gas/charcoal grills outside
