Real Property Management of the Rockies

Open Ears, Closed Mouth

It’s human nature to think you know a lot about something you do every day.  And, that is typically the case.  You are typically an expert in what you do, day in and day out.  However, when you work in an industry where people’s satisfaction is key to your success, you need to know how to please the people you work for.

Like many industries, property management is all about the customer’s satisfaction.  In our case, there are two different customers.  There are property owners and there are tenants.  Both have different needs but both are very important.  When dealing with owners, we learn much by listening to their story.  Some owners are stepping into the world of investment property ownership for the first time.  Some owners are hiring their first property management company.  And, some owners are leaving their current property management company an coming to us.  Whatever the case, we learn a lot from our owners.  We hear about their successes, their problems, and sometimes their failures.  All of this helps us A) serve them better and B) learn more about property management.

On the other hand, the tenant is also a wealth of information.  The tenant’s needs are much different.  They are looking for a great place to rent at a great price.  Most tenants we talk to are most concerned about the property and the price.  However, many tenants will share valuable information too. Such as past rental situations, past rental positives, and past rental negatives.  When they tell us about their past, we can once again open our ears and close our mouths.  This allows us to continue gaining information about the industry we serve.

Once we have listened, it gives us a better opportunity to speak intelligently to the customer, owner or tenant.  When it is our time to speak, we can speak in a language that allows the customer to feel like our partner instead of our customer.  Over time, this has become a competitive advantage for our company.
