Now that summer is in full swing, the mosquitoes are coming out to play. With the amount of moisture we have had in Northern Colorado during early summer, it has created an environment that is ripe for mosquito activity. As a result, we want to share with you some common tips on how to protect you and your loved ones from mosquito activity.
- Be aware of peak exposure times and places. Although mosquitoes may bite at any time during the day, they are most active during the twilight times of the day: dawn and dusk. So, if you plan to avoid the outdoors during those times of the day or take preventative action if you plan to be outside.
- Wear appropriate clothing. Although it may be uncomfortable on warm Northern Colorado evenings, wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants is always a good tip when outdoors during peak activity times. There are some repellents that can be applied to your clothing that can increase your protection.
- Apply insect repellent. Do your research on the most effective, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellent. The repellents that typically work best include the active ingredient, DEET. Other active ingredients that work well are IR3535 and plant-based oil of lemon eucalyptus. So, find out what works best for you and be sure to apply before heading outdoors.
- Look for local mosquito control programs. Reach out to your local government and see if they have any local control activities. Typically, local governments most mosquito control activities. County or city governments are the best ones to contact regarding such programs.
