The Trains in Fort Collins

Recently, I have been stuck at several train crossings in Fort Collins. I have even been stuck at crossings in Timnath, along Harmony Road. Whenever I find myself delayed by a train, it always seems to be when I am going to an important meeting or event. So, as I pondered my bad luck at train crossings, I began to wonder if others were having a similar experience as me.

I went out to the web and began searching for information around train crossings in Fort Collins. I read many articles, many rants, many posts, etc. I was looking for some data that would give me an indication of better times to travel across Fort Collins to avoid train activity. I wasn’t able to find much data regarding the time of day but I did find data regarding train crossings, in general:

  1. When train crossing arms come down, the average wait is 5 minutes and 25 seconds.
  2. In 2014, there were 86 “arm down” delays that exceeded 15 minutes

This information came from an article published by The Coloradoan. They also reported that train speeds have been increased to 25 MPH from 10 MPH to help alleviate the delays residents are experiencing. So, if you are experiencing the same train delays I am, plan to give yourself 5 minutes of buffer as you travel across the city. Just hope that you don’t get one of the delays that exceed 15 minutes.
